Our tree, generously donated by Poets Corner Press/Sally’s Shipping Counter, is located in front of The Black Dog at 32 Main Street.

Say hello to Aidan Carter-Frem, Lillian Hanly, Elizaveta Tcherniaeva, and Justin Yip, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) students working with us to evaluate the usage of the Nantucket Community Pool at 30 Surfside Road.
The WPI group has created a survey to accomplish their goal. Responses are anonymous, and survey participants can enter for a chance to win a free one-month pool membership in a raffle. Survey results will help shape the future of the pool and its programming.
“The Nantucket Community Pool is a valuable resource for our community,” said NCS Executive Director Alicia Graziadei. “Our facility is open six days a week, Monday through Saturday, and offers programming for all ages. We try our best to provide programming and space for all our island residents and visitors; however, this has become increasingly difficult as our population continues to grow.”

This beautiful fall weather has us yearning to explore all of the island’s beautiful properties! Luckily, we have access to Nantucket’s most knowledgeable people from a variety of different organizations.

On Tuesday morning, Seth Engelbourg, Naturalist Educator and Program Manager at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, took NCS staff on a guided tour of their property at 110 Eel Point Road. An abundance of wildlife calls the organization’s 275-acre parcel home, and it includes coastal heathlands, sand plain grasslands, and vegetated wetlands.
•
In addition to walking the property, we also got to see and touch some artifacts along the way!
•
Did you know? We partner with LLNF to offer Story Walk, a free, family-friendly activity that provides a chance to explore the trail and read a book as you walk! Spanish translation is available. Check it out from sun-up to sun-down.

Wednesday marked the beginning of the recreational scalloping season here on Nantucket, and it was only appropriate for our Little Nature Explorers group to meet this week at Little Neck beach in Madaket to learn all about scallops.
•
Neil Foley, Interpretive Education Coordinator/Ecologist at the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, showed off the shellfish on part of the foundation’s 23-acre property, teaching about feeding habits, their anatomy, and how they move in the water.
•
Join us and NCF this fall at various locations across the island on Tuesday mornings from 10:30-11:30am. For families with children ages birth through five years, Little Nature Explorers is just as fun for caregivers as it is for kids!

The Nantucket Community School team took to the water at Folger’s Marsh this past Tuesday for a kayak tour through the extensive salt marsh between Polpis Road and Nantucket Harbor.
Under the guidance of Neil Foley, Interpretive Education Coordinator/Ecologist at the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, we learned that this is a habitat for a variety of shorebird species and colonial water birds that migrate through the area to feed in the spongy peat and mud flats. Keep an eye out for egrets and herons and an active osprey nest on the property.
We are incredibly thankful to Neil and to the staff at the Egan Maritime Institute who let us utilize their property and launch our kayaks from their Shipwreck and Lifesaving Museum located at the edge of the marsh. This was a fun and interactive way to learn about this valuable ecosystem, and none of this would have been possible without our island partners!
